Matilde César is a visual artist from Madeira Island, Portugal, working across photography and moving image. Deeply influenced by the natural world, her practice explores the nuances of coexisting with nature through both digital and analog processes, engaging with themes of memory, place, and belonging that are often rooted in the landscapes and cultural context of her native island.
She studied Photography & Imaging at NYU Tisch School of the Arts in New York in 2020–21 and completed her BA in Photography at Universidade Lusófona in Lisbon in 2024.
In 2025, her first short film, Foi Com O Mar, premiered at IndieLisboa and was subsequently selected for the official programmes of FilmIn – Revoluções Curtas 2025, Entre Olhares 2025, and AzoreanIFF 2026, marking the beginning of her journey in cinema.
