Vhils – Debris, Macau
The pace at which the world is moving has sped up dramatically compared to 20 years ago, and while this has given us an infinity of positive things and progress, it has also given rise to new questions and paradigms. Is the world still a big place? It takes us three hours to drive 300 kms yet we can send a photograph to the other side of the world in a mere second. Are distances becoming shorter? Is the world shrinking? Are the gaps between us becoming smaller? Or are we drifting apart? We’re constantly texting, talking, posting online about everything and anything, but are we really communicating most of the time? And maybe more importantly, is anybody really listening?
Exploring the universal nature of storytelling, this short film written and directed by Portuguese filmmaker José Pando Lucas in partnership with acclaimed Portuguese visual artist Vhils, takes the work which the latter developed in Macau SAR, China, in 2017, as a springboard to deliver a poignant, poetic narrative that reflects on issues inherent to our global urban societies and the present human condition. While acting as a conceptual complement to Vhils’ work, the film also stands as an independent piece in its own right.
